The Big Picture Managing the Integrated System—Key to Sustainability

During the development of ISO 9001:2000 in the late 1990s there was discussion about whether to emphasize the notion of process management that is stated in the quality management principle “process approach” or the concept of the “system approach to management.” Explaining the process approach was easier and so the standard emphasizes it. The standard does require identification of the interfaces between the processes of the quality management system but managing those interfaces has received less emphasis than managing the individual processes.
This presentation describes why it is vital for senior leaders to understand and manage the whole management system. This means that each organization has only one management system. While that system may have components to manage product quality, environmental performance, health and safety, finance, investor relations, and so on, it is really one system. Leaders need to learn to think about that whole system when taking decisions, making changes, and improving processes. This is true because changes or decisions in one part of the system can cause serious problems in another part. The presentation describes strategies to develop a management system to sustain the success of the organization. |
